The Sawiris Cultural Award in Egypt announced the names of the winners in its eighteenth session
The Sawiris Cultural Award was established in 2005 and is presented annually by the Sawiris Foundation for the Social Development in the fields of novel, short story, criticism, cinematic script, theatrical text, and children’s literature.
Among the winners of this prestigious award is the renowned Egyptian writer Ashraf Aboul Yazid. He was awarded for the children's book titled My Cat Writes a Book.
Ashraf Aboul Yazid is a poet, journalist and travel writer. He worked in cultural journalism for more than three decades. He has written 40 books in novels, poetry, travel literature, biographies, translation, and children’s literature. About winning the award, he said:
My happiness for winning The Sawiris Cultural Award is that it is the first award for me in children's literature, and the first for me in Egypt... Being awarded in Egypt has a different taste.
He also spoke about his winning work for “The Cultural Street”, saying:
Writing for children is not the easiest, and it is not satisfied with the talent of storytelling. It is a hard research work that combines the capabilities of language, science, and the ability to address the new generation. Poetry, travel literature, adventure, the story, and the novel, all of which I addressed to adults first, before being a special language suitable for young people, with eloquent and modern vocabulary.
